Bellingham Ferry Terminal Wedding // Melissa + Arne

March 31, 2017

There are a hundred different readings that are often heard at weddings, you can Google the most popular ones right now.  You'll get verses about love being patient and kind as well as sonnets about one's ever-fixed mark.  But Melissa and Arne took their wedding day through the route of poetry that made everyone laugh and cry and nod in agreement.

First they chose to read "How falling in love is like owning a dog" by Taylor Mali and everyone who has ever loved a dog ever was in awe of the similarities and also itching to get home and cuddle their pups.  Then came the very poetic Hebrew story of God creating Adam and Eve as perfect helpers for one another.  Finally, "On Marriage" by Khalil Gibran, a movement meant for those who respect the individuality of those entering into a commitment as grand and mysterious as marriage.

If you meet these two you know that's how they love each other; playfully, helpfully, grandly and mysteriously.  They are adventurers who climb mountains in Iceland and forge new trails through forests and yet find their greatest experiences in the quiet and calm of each other's hand.

Each person that joined the celebration of these two came to bear witness to what love can do when it is unleashed in the human heart.  Of course everyone marveled at the beautiful blue skies in March and gave thanks for good fun with good friends.  But most of all, they came for the way Melissa talks about Arne and for the way Arne lives a life consistent with the character and integrity filled stories that are told about him.  Their day was made possible not just because of good planning and lucky weather.  It was made because the poets said so, and it was good.
We managed to sneak off to the docks during the last 15 minutes of sunlight.  I will never know what Arne whispered in Melissa's ear in those last moments but I know she will never forget it.
Congratulations friends.  I could not be more excited for your future together and I can't wait to hear all about Iceland.
